ChatGPT can’t write because it can’t read. This is true of all LLMs. Let me explain.
Ultimately, LLMs perceive words mathematically. They represent words as numbers and used a form of mathematics called vectoring to map the common relationships between different words.
They then produce language probabilistically.
The tasteless chef
Let’s imagine we have a chef with no sense of taste, nor a mouth. To overcome this quite severe obstacle in his or her chef career the Tasteless Chef has developed a genius level IQ and a mathematical model for analysing the pairings of flavours and textures deemed desirable.
He or she is then able to produce food to order in line with whatever the customer has requested.
Though they themselves cannot taste it.
So, in the same way the tasteless chef cannot taste, ChatGPT cannot read. And that, contentiously, is why it cannot write. Or at least not in the human sense of the word.
